Material Guide · Kerala & Tamil Nadu
Materials that survive Kerala's climate.
Kerala gets 2,500–3,500mm of rain a year and 85%+ humidity through the monsoon. That single fact should decide almost every material in your home. This is the exact specification BYTS builds to, and why we use BWP 710 marine ply, powder-coated hardware, anti-fungal emulsion and anti-skid tiles. Compare the grades yourself, then ask any contractor the right questions.
Why Kerala is different
The climate is the client.
Most Indian interior advice is written for Bangalore, Mumbai or Delhi. Kerala's monsoon is longer, wetter and more sustained, with more than twice Bangalore's annual rainfall. It is the sustained humidity, not just the rain, that quietly destroys inferior materials: cabinet boxes swell at the base, doors misalign, laminate edges lift, chrome hardware pits, and walls grow black mould.
The good news is that the fixes are well understood. Get five decisions right (plywood grade, shutter finish, hardware, countertop and wet-area finishes) and your interior will still look new after a decade of monsoons.
The five decisions
Plywood grade
BWP 710 marine for every carcass
Shutter finish
Sealed surfaces for wet zones
Hardware
Powder-coated, never chrome
Countertop
Granite or quartz, not marble
Wet-area finishes
Anti-fungal paint & anti-skid tiles
01 · Plywood grades
Plywood: the one decision that matters most.
Plywood is graded by the resin bonding its veneers and how much moisture that bond survives. For Kerala, the carcass (the structural box behind every cabinet and wardrobe) must beBWP (IS:710) 710-grade marine plywood, the highest moisture rating in India, bonded with boiling-water-proof phenol-formaldehyde resin. BWR (IS:303) is a lower "resistant" grade for dry rooms only; MR, MDF and particle board fail fast near moisture.
| Grade | Moisture performance | Recommended use | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| BWP marine plywood (IS:710) | Excellent, boiling-water rated | All kitchen & wardrobe carcasses | BYTS standard |
| BWR plywood (IS:303) | Good, but below marine grade | Lower-cost carcasses in dry rooms only | Alternative, not for wet zones |
| MR plywood (moisture resistant) | Poor; swells within 2 seasons | Avoid for Kerala kitchens & wardrobes | Weak resin, not for humidity |
| MDF | Poor; absorbs moisture permanently | Decorative door faces in dry rooms | Never for carcasses |
| Particle board | Very poor; fails within 1 season | Not recommended in Kerala | Avoid |
Never let a contractor substitute MR plywood for a Kerala carcass. Cut and installed, the boards look identical, and the difference only shows after one monsoon.
02 · Shutter finishes
Shutters: the face you see and touch daily.
The shutter is the visible door front; the carcass behind it should always be BWP 710 marine ply. For kitchens and bathrooms, prefer a fully sealed surface (acrylic or membrane) that shrugs off steam and humidity. Laminate and PU are excellent value for bedrooms and drier zones, provided edges are properly sealed.
| Finish | Look & feel | Moisture performance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic | High-gloss, mirror-like, premium | Excellent, fully sealed | Kitchen doors throughout |
| Membrane / PVC | Seamless moulded, matte or gloss | Very good, one-piece sealed skin | Kitchen & bathroom areas |
| Laminate | Widest range, matte / textured | Good in dry areas, seal edges | Bedrooms & drier zones |
| PU / lacquer | Smooth painted, any colour | Good, needs skilled application | Premium accent units |
03 · Hardware
Hardware: powder-coated, never chrome.
Hinges and drawer channels are used thousands of times and live in the most humid part of the house. Chrome plating pits and corrodes in Kerala's air within a couple of years. Powder-coated stainless steel soft-close hardware (BYTS uses soft-close hinges & channels (Hettich / Hafele grade)) keeps working smoothly for 8 to 10 years.
| Hardware type | Typical life in Kerala | Corrosion resistance | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powder-coated stainless (Hettich / Hafele grade) | 8–10 years | Excellent resistance | BYTS standard for all hinges, channels, handles |
| Chrome-plated | 18–24 months | Corrodes in humid air | Avoid in Kerala |
04 · Countertops
Countertops: hard, sealed and stain-proof.
A kitchen worktop faces water, heat and staining daily. Granite is the practical Kerala default: hard, heat-resistant, locally quarried and excellent value. Engineered quartz offers a non-porous, uniform, modern surface at a premium. Stainless steel suits utility and commercial kitchens. Avoid untreated marble in kitchens, as it stains and etches.
| Material | Strengths | Trade-offs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granite | Hard, heat-resistant, local, great value | Fewer uniform colours; seal periodically | Practical default |
| Engineered quartz | Non-porous, stain-resistant, uniform colours | Higher cost; less heat tolerance than granite | Premium modern look |
| Stainless steel | Fully hygienic, waterproof, commercial-grade | Scratches show; industrial look | Utility & commercial kitchens |
05 · Flooring, ceilings & finishes
The finishes that hold the whole thing together.
Beyond carpentry, a handful of finish choices decide whether a Kerala home stays dry, safe and mould-free. Anti-fungal emulsion beats black mould, anti-skid tiles beat wet-floor slips, PVC beats gypsum in wet ceilings, and termite treatment protects everything wooden.
| Area | BYTS specification | Why it matters in Kerala |
|---|---|---|
| Wall paint | Anti-fungal emulsion, 2 coats | Stops black mould in 85%+ humidity |
| Wet-area flooring | Anti-skid textured tiles | Prevents slips on wet monsoon feet |
| Bathroom / seepage ceilings | PVC panels (not gypsum) | Gypsum sags and moulds when damp |
| Dry-room ceilings | Gypsum false ceiling | Fine in protected, dry interiors |
| Window reveals (SW-facing) | Cement-board or PVC trim | Handles monsoon window splash |
| Carpentry near water | Termite-treated marine ply | Resists swelling and termite attack |
The BYTS standard spec.

Material FAQ
Questions Kerala homeowners ask.
What is the best plywood grade for a modular kitchen in Kerala?
BWP (IS:710) 710-grade marine plywood. It uses a phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin tested to withstand boiling water, which is the highest moisture rating available in India. In Kerala's 85%+ monsoon humidity this is the only grade that reliably survives 10 or more years for kitchen and wardrobe carcasses. BWR (IS:303) is a lower resistant grade suitable only for drier rooms, and MR, MDF and particle board should never be used near moisture.
What plywood does BYTS use as standard?
BWP (IS:710) 710-grade marine plywood is BYTS's default for every kitchen and wardrobe carcass. It is the standard, not a paid upgrade. We do not substitute BWR, MR or MDF for structural carcasses in Kerala homes.
Why does Kerala need different interior materials than other states?
Kerala receives 2,500 to 3,500mm of rain a year, more than twice Bangalore's rainfall, and humidity stays above 85% for months. It is the sustained humidity, not just the rain, that destroys inferior materials. Boards that last 12 years in a drier climate can swell, warp and delaminate within two or three monsoons in Palakkad if the wrong grade is used, so plywood grade, hardware finish, wall paint and tiles all need climate-specific choices.
Which cabinet hardware lasts longest in Kerala humidity?
Powder-coated stainless steel hinges and channels. Chrome-plated hardware corrodes in Kerala's coastal, humid air within roughly 18 to 24 months, while powder-coated soft-close hardware from brands like Hettich and Hafele maintains function for 8 to 10 years. Powder-coated hardware is the BYTS standard on all hinges, channels and handles.
Are acrylic shutters worth it over laminate for Kerala kitchens?
For kitchens, yes. Acrylic and membrane (PVC) shutters present a fully sealed, moisture-resistant surface that handles humidity and steam well. Laminate is durable and cost-effective but relies on properly sealed edges, so it is better suited to bedrooms and drier zones. The carcass behind any shutter should still be BWP 710 marine plywood.
What countertop is best for a Kerala kitchen: granite or quartz?
Granite is the practical default: it is naturally hard, heat-resistant, locally available and priced well, and Kerala has excellent local stone. Engineered quartz is non-porous, stain-resistant and available in consistent modern colours, at a higher price. Both perform well in the monsoon. Avoid untreated marble in kitchens because it stains and etches.
How do I stop black mould on Kerala walls and inside cabinets?
Use anti-fungal emulsion (two coats) on bathroom walls, kitchen backsplash zones and any west or south wall facing the monsoon wind. Keep exhaust fans working, and leave a 10mm gap between the back of a cabinet or vanity and the wall for air circulation. Anti-fungal treatment is planned into every BYTS Kerala project from the design stage.
Should I use gypsum false ceilings and which floor tiles for wet areas?
Gypsum false ceilings are fine in protected, dry interior rooms but should be avoided in bathrooms or rooms with any history of roof seepage; use PVC panels there and fix roof waterproofing first. For flooring, specify anti-skid textured tiles in all wet areas (entrances, utility rooms, bathrooms); smooth polished tiles become dangerous with wet monsoon feet.
